Studio origin
Eco-Junkie Studios is a veteran-run family business rooted in resilience, creativity, and care for the planet. What began as a shared love for making with our hands became a full studio practice where every piece carries a story.
Our slow fashion garments are built from upcycled materials and finished with handpainted prints—turning forgotten textiles into wearable art with soul and texture.
Together, we rescue materials others overlook, honoring their past while giving them a new future in forms that feel both grounded and one-of-a-kind.
Family roles
The studio is led by a mother and daughter—both women veterans—who shape the vision and paint every textile by hand. The father brings reclaimed wood back to life, sculpting lamps, tables, and statement pieces while supporting the logistics that keep the studio moving.

Every new body of work begins with an endangered species — a living story we carry into cloth. This season, we honor the Florida Scrub-Jay, a rare blue songbird found only in the scrublands of central Florida.
Their world is a mosaic of sand pine, palmetto, and open sky. As habitat shrinks, their calls grow quieter. We keep their presence alive by translating their rhythm into wearable art and by sharing the ecological truth behind their beauty.

A Bird of Family and Fire-Shaped Land
In the sunlit scrublands of Florida lives the Florida scrub jay, a bird found nowhere else on Earth. It moves through a landscape of pale sand, low-growing scrub oaks, and scattered pines—an ecosystem shaped by openness and light. Smaller and softer in color than its familiar relative, the Blue Jay, the scrub jay wears gentle shades of blue across its wings and head, with a gray back and a pale underside. Its smooth, crestless head gives it a calm, understated presence against the bright Florida sky.
Life in the scrub is deeply rooted in family. Florida scrub jays live in close-knit groups, where young birds often stay with their parents longer than most songbirds. Rather than leaving immediately, they help feed, protect, and raise the next generation—a remarkable behavior known as Cooperative Breeding. These family groups work together each day, sharing the tasks of nesting, feeding chicks, and defending their home territory.
Within these families, the scrub jay often takes on the role of a quiet sentinel. One bird may perch high on a branch or scrub oak, standing watch over the group while others forage below. From this vantage point, it scans the open landscape for danger—hawks overhead, snakes in the brush, or any sudden movement nearby. At the first sign of a threat, it gives a sharp warning call, alerting the family so they can quickly seek cover. This watchful behavior is one of the many ways their strong social bonds help the group survive.
They are also careful gatherers. Scrub jays rely heavily on acorns, collecting and burying them in the sandy soil throughout their territory. Each bird may hide thousands of acorns in a season, remembering many of their hiding places months later. Some are forgotten, and from those small hidden stores, new oak plants begin to grow. In this way, the scrub jay quietly helps renew the very habitat it depends on, acting not only as guardian of its family, but as a steward of the Florida scrub itself.

Restoring a Home: Conservation of the Florida Scrub Jay
The story of the Florida scrub jay is closely tied to the land it calls home. Unlike many birds, it cannot simply move on when its habitat changes. It depends on a rare and shrinking ecosystem—Florida’s scrub—where sunlight reaches the sandy ground and low oak shrubs stretch across the landscape. As this habitat has disappeared or grown too dense over time, people have stepped in to help restore the balance the scrub jay needs to survive.
One of the most important tools in this effort is fire. Long before roads and cities, natural fires regularly moved through Florida’s scrublands, keeping the vegetation low and open. Today, land managers carefully reintroduce this process through prescribed burns: small, controlled fires that mimic nature. These burns clear out overgrown plants and allow the scrub oaks to regrow at just the right height, creating a landscape where scrub jays can once again nest, forage, and watch over their families.
Protecting the land itself is just as important. Across Florida, conservation groups and agencies work to preserve remaining scrub habitats and connect them where possible. By setting aside protected areas and managing them with care, they create safe spaces where scrub jay families can live and grow. In some cases, restored habitats are even given a second chance at life when scientists gently relocate scrub jays to these renewed landscapes, helping establish new family groups in places where they had once disappeared.
Careful observation guides all of this work. Through long-term research and community science programs like Audubon Florida’s Jay Watch, people across the state help monitor scrub jay populations year after year. Scientists study how the birds respond to changes in their habitat—how they nest, where they thrive, and what challenges they face. This shared effort ensures that conservation is not only active, but informed, growing and adapting alongside the needs of the bird.
There is hope in the steady return of balance: in protected land, in renewed scrub, and in the patient attention of those who keep watch. The Florida scrub jay’s recovery is not quick, but it is possible—carried forward by care, science, and the belief that a landscape can heal when given the chance.
